I am headed to Juneau!

The Abreu Fellowship at New England Conservatory has so many exciting and unique opportunities for the Fellows. We each get to custom tailor an Internship experience-learning from El Sistema-inspired initiatives in the UNited States. I decided to spend the bulk of my Internship in Juneau, Alaska at JAMM (Junea Alaska Music Matters). The program is founded by Lorrie Heagy, an Abreu Fellow alum and the 2011 Alaska State Teacher of the Year.

The program is a gleaming example of an in-school model–all Kindergarten and First Grade students receive 90 minutes of violin each week- and they are seeing tremendous results in the student’s academic acheivement. In the first 4 months of the program, the kindergarten students reading standardized test scores increased from 11% to 55%.
