After nine consecutive years of low School Performance Index scores, Jones Middle School was identified for the School District of Philadelphia’s Renaissance Schools initiative. (In the 2010-2011 school year, 12 percent of the 6th graders scored proficient in reading. The initiative identifies chronically low-performing District schools that are not likely to achieve dramatic improvements without transformative change. On April 18, 2012, a committe of parents and community members elected American Paradigm Schools (APS), an innovative Educational Management Organization with two successful Philadelphia schools, to turn their school around.
APS has curated a innovative plan for school reform that includes creating a caring school community where all students feel safe enough to learn and thrive. Sister Cities Girlchoir, due to the research-based strategies it employs to reduce high-risk behavior, improve academic performance and build community, was selected as a critical element in the APS strategic plan for school improvement.
