Dr. Julianne Baird, Rutgers-Camden faculty artist and renowned soprano was the Honorary Guest and spoke to the assemblage about her passion to see El Sistema-inspired work in Camden and urged the women to support the work. Harriet introduced Alysia Lee, Artistic Director and Founder of SCG, who spoke about the research-based program as positive youth development initiative that employs the power of music to build confidence, community and cognitive skills. A delegation of girls performed songs in four languages and even performed a folk dance after just two weeks of rehearsal this summer. Then all of the women joined in a song led by the girlchoir. It was a beautiful evening filled with music and hope!
