Girlchoir presents to NAME Conference in Center City

Coro Kensington @ Memphis Street Academy travelled to Center City today to perform at the National Association of Multicultural Education conference. The conference advances and advocates for equity and social justice through multicultural education. SCG Founder & Artistic Director, Alysia Lee spoke about SCG’s mission to bring a new Girlchoir movement to Philadelphia and Camden that empowers at-risk girls to occupy their unique place in creating a better world. The Girlchoir performed a set of songs that included the American Folk, English Madrigal, and Broadway musical tradition. After singing for 300 attendees and the Girlchoir received a standing ovation!

Thank you to organizer Tchet Dorman for organizing a stellar 2012 Conference.

  1. I’m happy to say that I was one of the first to stand up for their wonderful performance at NAME–they definitely deserved the standing-o! Their performance brought tears to my eyes as I remembered how I began singing at their age and how music has had such an important impact on my life.

I had never heard of this group before attending NAME and I’m thankful to see that such a wonderful program exists. Please keep doing what you’re doing! Congrats to the singers for a lovely performance!
